Contents

This book forms the core collection of source material for the Delta Green setting. It is by far the most successful and critically-acclaimed publication produced by Pagan Publishing.

To date this book has been published in two separate editions, the first as a sourcebook using the mechanics of Chaosium's Basic Role Playing (BRP) system -- as used in the classic Call of Cthulhu. The second publication was as a dual-statted book, with stats provided for both BRP and the Call of Cthulhu d20 system published by Wizards of the Coast. Appart from the addition of the d20 statistics, the second edition has no major substantive textual changes from the first.

Delta Green is a modern-day setting, offered as an alternative to the vision of modern Call of Cthulhu presented by Chaosium in its Cthulhu Now supplements. Where the latter seek to simply translate the Lovecraftian genre, complete with its isolated groups of scholarly investigators, into the modern day. Delta Green, on the other hand, heavily infuses conspiracy theory and modern-day espionage into the mix, making the player roles that of agents or other civil servants who are part of a shadowy and ill-defined conspiracy within the U.S. Government.

This book contains the main material which describes the "Delta Green" conspiracy, which is a natural home for player characters. It also defines other conspiracies and organisations that exist as rivals to Delta Green, or who may naturally come into conflict or alliegance with it.

The book is divided into a number of sections, each detailing one organisation or conspiracy. These are followed by a collection of long appendices. The structure is:

  • Introduction
  • Chapter 1: The Big Picture
    • The Mythos in the 1990s
    • The Fungi from Yuggoth
    • Big Brother from Then to Now
    • Timeline: Big Brother from Then to Now
  • Chapter 2: Delta Green
    • Timeline: Delta Green
    • Important Individuals: Delta Green
  • Chapter 3: Majestic-12
    • Timeline: Majestic-12
    • Important Individuals: Majestic-12
  • Chapter 4: Karotechia
    • Important Individuals: Karotechia
  • Chapter 5: SaucerWatch
    • Important Individuals: SaucerWatch
  • Chapter 6: The Fate
    • Important Individuals: The Fate
  • Appendices
  • Index

The "Appendices" form over half the entire book, consisting of over 150 pages, primarily devoted to source material defining different aspects of the Delta Green setting, but also including scenarios, new rules and information important to creating characters to play in this universe. The appendices are organized as follows:

Campaigns: The final two scenarios in this book (The Prince Is Dead, Long Live the Prince and Dawn of the New Age) form a mini-campaign called The New Age. Everything in this book is part of the broader Delta Green (Campaign) defined by the setting.

Scenarios: Puppet Shows and Shadow Plays, Convergence, The New Age, Part 1: The Prince Is Dead, Long Live the Prince and The New Age, Part 2: Dawn of the New Age

1st/2nd Edition Front Cover Text

A Call of Cthulhu Sourcebook of Modern Horror and Conspiracy From Pagan Publishing

"This is like nothing anyone has ever understood. This is pure evil, pure destruction. This is the apocalypse."

1st/2nd Edition Back Cover Text

Welcome to America at the end of the millennium. Do you know who is pulling the strings?

Delta Green knows. Things from beyond space and time that lurk and titter in the shadows, the slow rot at the core of humanity, the dark stars that whirl madly above –- these are the true masters of the world. Delta Green has been fighting them since the 1928 Raid on Innsmouth, and the fight still rages on.

This book is your weapon and your guide. The largest Call of Cthulhu sourcebook ever.

Inside you’ll find the secret history of the 20th century, and the movers and the shakers who are players in the game: Delta Green, the outlaw conspiracy working inside the U.S. government to fight the darkness: Majestic-12, the clandestine agency that cuts deals with aliens and reports to no one: SaucerWatch, a UFO study group close to the truth than they know; the Karotechia, immortal Nazis who serve a risen Hitler; and the Fate, an occult criminal syndicate that knows where the bodies are buried. Plus: new skills, new spells, new weapons, new Mythos tomes, profiles of thirty-six real-world intelligence and law-enforcement agencies, with character templates for each, a look at Mi-Go biology, philosophy, and operations, analysis of the Cthulhu Mythos in the modern day, a factual history of the U.S intelligence and law-enforcement community, dozens of useful NPCs, campaign-construction guidelines, two scenarios, a short campaign, and more.

Comments / Trivia

This book was the winner of the 1997 Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design award Best Role Playing Supplement.

The Delta Green setting was subsequently elaborated in a series of further sourcebooks, mostly concentrating on the introduction of new conspiracies and organisations and the description of equivalents to Delta Green in countries other than the United States. A series of three mail-order-only supplements were produced first, under the byline "Delta Green Eyes Only". These were followed by a more broadly available sourcebook Delta Green: Countdown. This was the last official sourcebook for the Delta Green universe for over a decade; however more recently, a third significant sourcebook, Delta Green: Targets of Opportunity has been released.

In addition to being elaborated through sourcebooks, the Delta Green world was described through a series of novels and short story collections. Roleplaying material set in this world regularly appears in magazines, in particular The Black Seal and (to a lesser extent) Worlds of Cthulhu.

The Delta Green entry features an exhaustive list of all offical supplements and fiction.

The scenario Convergence originally appeared in The Unspeakable Oath, Issue 07 where elements of the role-playing game Cyberpunk by R. Talsorian Games were included in the scenario.

Dennis Detwiller's Dedication: "To Nick, Thomas, Ian and Scott. Regards from S.R."

Adam Scott Glancy's Dedication: "To my editor, publisher, and case officer, John Tynes; and to CSM, a fellow civil servant who, like myself, would rather be a writer."

John Tynes' Dedication: "To the late Memphis Aerial Phenomenon Society, for telling me all their secrets."

The fact that the 2nd (dual-statted) Edition of this book is commonly called "Delta Green d20" has lead to considerable confusion, as numerous distributors, game stores and collectors have assumed that this name denotes a d20 ONLY edition (i.e., one which contains no BRP content). That is not the case.

Due to a layout error in the 2nd (d20/BRP) Edition, one paragraph of text was omitted. Thus the description of the MJ-12 department MJ-9 is not included in this edition of the book.
