This book is made up mostly of essays addressing various aspects of the Cthulhu Mythos, in a non-gaming context (akin to that found in the several literary magazine devoted to Lovecraft studies). These essays are divided into two sections: Lore and Criticism.
Scenarios: In addition to essays, the book has one scenario: The Winslow Project

He has exposed The Cainite Heresy, and dug up the Secrets of the Ruined Temple. He has broadcast the Suppressed Transmissions, and ventured through Infinite Worlds. Now, horror heresiarch Kenneth Hite, the author of GURPS Horror 3rd Edition and Nightmares of Mine, assembles the Dubious Shards of the Cthulhu Mythos!
Among the blasphemous contents herein:
- An examination of the Cthulhu Mythos, and how to discover it for games and storytelling.
- In-depth explorations of Dagon, Irem, Dunwich, and other Lovecraftian topics.
- Critical essays on the politics of horror fiction, and why John Wayne would have played Call of Cthulhu.
- A never-before seen original Delta Green scenario of paranoia and surveillance.
- And a glimpse at the fearsome Tarot of Cthulhu!
WARNING: This book contains Dizzying Speculation, Eldritch Hints, and Maniacal Ravings. Not for the neurasthenic or phthisickal.
Comments / Trivia
The scenario in this book was originally written for Pagan Publishing's (long-time vaporware) Cult of Transcendence sourcebook for Delta Green. Hite notes that he sought and gained permission from Pagan for its independent publication due to "the length of time since its submission" in 1998. Some four years after the publication of Dubious Shards, Pagan eventually published material on the Cult of Transcendence in Delta Green: Targets of Opportunity, but The Winslow Project was not included.
